New blag!
Posted on August 4th, 2008 @ 4:18 pm

Ok, let’s try this again. I started a music blog for the station but interest sorta teetered out. Plus I had a discussion with another music director that music blogs aren’t super helpful to DJ’s. I imported all the old posts in, although some of the pics and videos got kinda screwy. I might fix it or might not. I’ll try to keep this as a general blog and post stuff I find interesting. I’ll try and not keep it music heavy as there’s a million music blogs out there already. All repeating the same thing.

The blag title is a homage to xkcd. I’ll try to post as often as I can but don’t hold your breath for new posts.

SXSW recap
Posted on March 20th, 2008 @ 8:11 am

I finally got off my butt and did my sxsw recap. Here goes nuthin’

I took a lot of video from my camera. The audio is terrible (video isn’t great either but I didn’t want to take a huge video camera around) but it’s good enough for web. The thing ended up being 18 minutes! Enjoy. and pardon the Mortal Kombat track. It was absolutely necessary.

So first thing was the Terrobird party. A wicked lineup at the hottest/hippest venue Emo’s. First thing I caught was YACHT. They had fun and danced around to laptop beats. YACHT opened for Architecture in Helsinki in Vancouver but we missed ‘em because me and Martine were lost walking around downtown Vancouver so I finally got to see ‘em here. I dugg them but some of the hipsters beside me were like “this is beyond awful” and left. To puke? who knows.

After the Mae Shi played. They were lame. I’m just not a fan. They pulled out a sheet and threw it on the crowd and played parachute like in elementary school. It was dumb.

maeshi.jpg

I would’ve yelled something at them but I seen this sign and got scared:

sign.jpg

Me and Lisa from CMJ ran next door and caught the Death Set. I’ve only heard of their name before. They put on a wicked fun show! High energy party times with gold teeth.

deathset.jpg

Back to the other room to see the off kilter jangle rap of Why? Lot’s of songs of the new Alopecia album. Adding to the CKXU playlist this weekend! You’ve been warned.

why.jpg

I stayed for the Blow. Second time seeing her. She had a huge gushing story to tell between each song about the people she met on the street at SXSW. It was cute in a gay puppy dog kinda way.

From what I understand her and the YACHT guy where dating but not anymore hence her solo appearance. I wonder if awkwardness ensued backstage while they set up?

theblow.jpg

After dinner with Linsdey Merge and Bekah Suicide Squeeze went down at a Mexican place. Some MD spilt a huge juice sized pitcher of salsa when he stood up. It splashed on our table and got in CJSR David’s eye. I told him to wear that tortilla chip eyepatch but he was all “nooo. that’s the dumbest invention I’ve seen”.

Then I went to the TeePee records to see me some stoner bands. Earthless started off with 20 minute jams and then Witch riffed it up with a few new songs of the new Paralyzed album. The Earthless guitarist closed his eyes during the guitar noodling sections. It looked funny but I guess you had to see it.

J Mascis’s hair is even greyer in person.

After that I ran around and couldn’t decide on what to go to so I just went back to Emos and caught Wizzards. They were set up on the floor with a projector.

wizzards.jpg

The projector had some 80’s movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger and had some speech about the Terminator uprising and John Connor. It was rad.

arny.jpg

Next day I melted from the sun and then seen Jay Reatard. Fast, short punk the way it should be. The set was like 20 minutes.

jayr.jpg

I then walked around.

people.jpg

and then went to the Austin music hall for Yo La Tengo!@ The venue sounds so good. I couldn’t take any pics and I had to leave my skateboard deck and coffee mug oustide in the bushes. Luckily they were there when I got back. I went back to walking around and realized how late I was for Dan Sartain! gah. missed him at White Stripes and now I missed him at SXSW. I did catch one song though. Gun vs. Knife. I hear he’s coming through Calgary again soon though…

dansartain.jpg

back to Emo’s for my 3rd time seeing Dandi Wind. Her pajama looking suit looked like it had blood or cranberry juice on it. Maybe a combination. During the set she took a sip of water and spit it on everyone. A resounding “ewww!” came from the crowd.

dandiwind.jpg

After I ran to the Def Jux showcase. I was walking through a sketchy area and had a skateboard deck on my back. I passed a guy on a dark part of the street and my board fell and made a huge klunk on the concrete. Like dropping a huge plank on the ground. The guy jumped out of his skin and made a weird sound. It was pretty funny.

After a guy from the venue told us to drink up and go home and thanks for coming to the “Jeff Ducks” show case.

Friday was my birthday. Dope. Another scorcher too. No wonder I look all native right now. In the afternoon I went to the Other/WNYU show and caught Atlas Sound. I dig Bradfod Cox because he is living proof that skinny dudes can be someone too.

atlassound1.jpg

While walking around with Myke and Peter from Calgary we stumbled onto a Herman Dune show in a furniture store. The stuff looked like Ikea but more expensive. Herman Dune played his conversational matter-of-fact pop with his brother and a puppet! Check the video for some footy of it. There was lots of pointing gawkers through the window but I couldn’t get a good pic. He told a story about how he was talking to a friend about SXSW and was like “yeah I really want to see (he made gibberish sounds) play” and his friend was like “yeah. me too!”.

hermandune.jpg

After the nice intimate furniture store show I went to the Sub Pop show for Pissed Jeans. The guy’s pretty funny on stage and would ask weird questions like “there’s some pebbles behind the stage here. do you guys want any” to the crowd. Some people I talked to said “yeah he just acts too much like David Yow”. To me that’s not a bad thing.

pissedjeans.jpg

After I went to the M is for Montreal show to see Nadja. *note. they are from Toronto actually.

They did 2 song set but Nadja tracks are about 20-30 minutes usually. They used a minidisc for drums and a ton of pedals and used a bow for their guitars. Fire blew from Aidans’ finger tips as he rosined up his bow.

nadja.jpg

The next day we were late getting downtown and on a 1.5 hour queue for a cab so we started hitchhiking. Luckily a dude doing the gypsy cab thing gave us a ridegypsycab.jpg

He said he does it every SXSW and he gave people like David Cross, Eugene Mirman and Janeane Garofalo rides. He also said he was 40 days sober. I took his card and he gave me a ride to the airport. His girlfriend was talking to me and he was like “stop bugging my customers”.

We went to the Team Clermont party that afternoon. It was under a tent in a slanted parking lot. They had sparkling pomegranate juice and candy and chips and 3 kegs!Oh! did I mention the sidewalk chalk? That was there too.

Garbage bag chips

jj.jpg

It never fails. Give out sidewalk chalk and someone draws a wang.

wang.jpg

After Myke got a craving for some frog legs so we went to the nearest frog legs dealership. Which was across the street.

froglegs.jpg

apparently everything tastes like chicken.

We went to the convention center to catch a few minutes of a Sons & Daughters show and then went to Monotonix. After a few minutes on stage they were like “screw this” and hauled all their gear into the crowd. They proceeded to dump garbage and beer on each other.
garbage.jpg

monotonix.jpg

After I ran back to Emo’s for Hanne Hukkleberg. I was hoping she played the Pixies cover on her newest disc and she did. hanne.jpg

aww. they even bowed for us!

bow.jpg

There was another Montreal show in a hairdresser themed place called Beauty Bar. It’s rad because you can sit in those things that perm your hair and watch a show. Too bad their beers are 5 bucks though! I caught Think about Life and CPC Gangbangs here. It was an Alien8 records show.

Think About Life:

thinkaboutlife.jpg

For some reason this guy (who I’m pretty sure I seen at CMJ in New York) got on stage and started dancing with the mic. I couldn’t even hear him so I don’t know if his mic was on.

dscf0526.jpg

I’ve heard a lot about CPC Gangbangs live show so I figured they’d be good to end off SXSW with. Halfway through the set the sound guy pushes off the guitarist and he falls off the stage on to his back. A short shovefest ensues and they break it up. Luckily they let them finish.

dscf0571.jpg

“why’d ya push me?!” “yah! why’d ya push him?!”

dscf0572.jpg

dscf0573.jpg

and then I met up with everyone and said goodbye and took a cab back to the hotel. I was smart and booked my flight for 5PM so I could get a full nights sleep. While some others stayed up all night and went to the airport hella early so they don’t miss their flight.

I also wasn’t burnt out at the end of SXSW. The key is to drink pepsi and tell everyone there’s alcohol in it. Give away those drink tickets and bbq and have fresh fruit instead. Yeah I was a lameoid this year.

Some bands I totally missed were: Black Mountain, Holy Fuck, Marked Men, Napalm Death and all those bands you told me to go see.

Next day in the airport I seen Janeane Garofalo in the Austin airport. I didn’t want to seem to fanboyish so I just asked her if she did a show this week. I asked her about the gypsy cab guy but she had no clue what I was talking about.

‘bye austin.
